The Couples Expedition: Why Some Marriages Are Heading into the Amazon Instead of Therapy

A new type of “retreat” is combining adventure travel with relationship repair.

“Most couples try to repair their relationship in the same environment that slowly pulled them apart. Sometimes the first step is leaving that environment entirely.” – Ryan Rees

Rafa Expeditions is a South America-based expedition company creating immersive journeys for couples seeking deep connection, clarity, and renewal.

Combining remote adventure travel with guided relational experiences, Rafa Expeditions takes couples far beyond traditional retreats – into jungles, rivers, mountains, and islands – where the environment itself becomes part of the transformation.

Groups are intentionally small, limited to no more than five couples, allowing for personal attention and meaningful shared experiences.

Founder’s Story

Ryan Rees, an American entrepreneur living in South America, founded Rafa Expeditions after realizing that many couples try to repair their relationships within the same environments that slowly pull them apart.

Rather than traditional retreats or therapy rooms, Rafa Expeditions brings couples into remote natural environments where the pace of modern life disappears.

The goal is simple: create the conditions where couples can rediscover each other without the distractions of everyday life.

Ryan’s broader vision is to build a network of expedition-style experiences across South America that combine culture, nature, and relationship renewal.

The Rafa Concept

Rafa Expeditions operates at the intersection of several global trends:

  • Experiential Travel
  • Adventure Tourism
  • Relationship Wellness
  • Slow Travel

Unlike traditional luxury resorts or large retreats, Rafa experiences are intentionally small and immersive.

Each journey combines:

  • Guided Relationship Conversations
  • Outdoor Exploration
  • Local Culture
  • Quiet Time for Couples

The natural environment becomes part of the experience.

Participants disconnect from phones, schedules, and modern stress, allowing space for reflection and reconnection.

Why It Matters

Modern couples face constant pressure from work, technology, and daily routines.

Rafa Expeditions offers something increasingly rare: time and space to reconnect away from the noise of modern life.

Rather than escaping problems temporarily, the goal is to help couples rediscover the foundation of their relationship in an environment designed for presence and honesty.

Ryan’s Hope…

For most of his life, Ryan Rees believed that if people just worked harder at their relationships, things would improve. But after years of watching marriages struggle, including his own, he began to suspect something deeper was wrong.

The problem wasn’t always the people.
Oftentimes it was the environment.

Modern couples are surrounded by noise: phones, work pressure, schedules, constant digital distraction. Even when couples try to repair their relationships through counseling or retreats, they often return to the same environment that slowly created the distance in the first place.

Ryan began wondering what would happen if couples could step completely outside of that world.

After relocating to South America, he found himself surrounded by some of the most powerful natural environments on earth; dense rainforest rivers, remote mountain communities, and quiet islands far removed from the pace of modern life.

Those places sparked an idea.

Instead of traditional retreats held in conference rooms or resort settings, what if couples were brought into expeditions – small, immersive journeys where the environment itself becomes part of the transformation?

That idea eventually became Rafa Expeditions.

Rafa journeys are intentionally small, limited to no more than five couples at a time. The experiences combine adventure travel, guided conversations, and cultural immersion in environments where modern distractions disappear.

The goal is not to “fix” relationships through lectures or therapy sessions.

Instead, the experience creates the conditions where couples can rediscover each other naturally; through shared challenges, quiet reflection, and the simple act of being present together.

Many couples arrive exhausted from the pace of modern life. Phones buzzing. Calendars full. Conversations reduced to logistics.

But something different happens when the noise disappears.

When couples travel down a jungle river, hike mountain paths together, or sit quietly under unfamiliar stars, the environment begins to change the rhythm of the relationship itself.

Conversations slow down.
Defenses soften.
People begin listening again.

Ryan believes that relationships, like ecosystems, need space to breathe.

And sometimes the most powerful step toward reconnecting isn’t talking more – it’s stepping far enough away from everyday life that couples can finally see each other clearly again.

Through Rafa Expeditions, he plans to build a network of journeys across South America where adventure, nature, and human connection intersect.

The vision is simple:

Create places where couples can rediscover not just the world around them, but each other.
